Post-Graduate Certificate in Minimal Access Surgery

Course Overview

The Post - Graduate Certificate in Minimal Access Surgery is a taught academic programme that provides basic and intermediate level training in minimal access surgery using integrated fresh cadaveric and virtual reality simulator based training. 

Programme Objectives 

  • To teach principles of Laparoscopic surgery 
  • To develop and enhance cognitive skills required for laparoscopic surgery using virtual reality simulator and fresh cadavers 
  • To develop procedure specific skills in laparoscopic surgery

Module One: Introductory Theory and Basic Skills in Minimal Access Surgery
(30 Credits)

  • Self –directed, interactive learning and group discussions
  • Video demonstration of procedures
  • Laparoscopic Basic Skills on virtual reality simulators

Module Two: Techniques and Intermediate Skills in Minimal Access Surgery
(30 Credits)

  • Self –directed, interactive learning and group discussions
  • Video demonstrations of procedures
  • Laparoscopic  Basic and Intermediate Skills on virtual reality simulator and Fresh Cadavers
  • Laparoscopic Full Procedure on virtual reality simulator and Fresh Cadavers including:
    • Laparoscopic Cholecystectomy 
    • Lap. hernia repair
    • Lap. perforated duodenal ulcer repair

Entry Requirements

Students must meet the following criteria:

  • Successfully completed the MB ChB or equivalent 
  • Successfully completed one year of Foundation Training or equivalent
  • Have an interest in surgery as a career

The successful completion of Postgraduate Certificate may enable the aspiring candidates to progress to Postgraduate Diploma/ M.Sc for advanced training.
